Will Smith’s Fast and Loose Lands New Director in John Swab — And Signals a Strategic Comeback Move

Will Smith’s long-awaited Netflix thriller Fast and Loose is back on track with King Ivory filmmaker John Swab stepping in to direct after Michael Bay’s exit. The new creative team signals a tonal shift for the high-concept action film — and a strategic new phase in Smith’s evolving career.

Netflix’s long-gestating action thriller Fast and Loose, starring Will Smith, is officially back on track. The streamer has tapped King Ivory filmmaker John Swab to direct after the departure of Michael Bay, signaling a creative reset for the project and a potential new phase for Smith as both star and producer.

A Double Life on the Run

According to sources close to production, Fast and Loose follows a man who awakens in Tijuana with no memory, only to discover he’s been living two completely different lives—one as a feared crime kingpin, the other as a covert CIA operative embedded in the same underworld he was meant to dismantle.

The film will be produced for Netflix with Smith starring and producing through his Westbrook Studios banner, alongside veteran producer Jerry Bruckheimer. The screenplay comes from Jon and Erich Hoeber (The Meg), Eric Pearson (Black Widow), and Dave Callaham (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings).

A Change Behind the Camera

Originally set to reunite Smith with Michael Bay for the first time since Bad Boys II, the project reportedly hit pause in early 2025 when Bay and Netflix executives clashed over tone. Bay was said to favor large-scale, effects-driven action, while Smith pushed for a story that balanced spectacle with character depth and humor.

Enter John Swab, whose recent indie crime drama King Ivory earned strong festival buzz for its raw, street-level storytelling about America’s opioid trade. Swab’s grounded approach appears to have impressed both Smith and Netflix leadership, leading to his official hiring in September.

With Swab on board, insiders expect Fast and Loose to lean less on pyrotechnics and more on gritty intensity and psychological tension, giving Smith room to flex both his dramatic and action chops.

A Strategic Career Move

For Smith, Fast and Loose represents more than another high-octane outing. After a period of measured career recalibration, the project aligns with his ongoing push toward character-driven material that still plays to his global fan base.

Choosing a younger, indie-minded director also marks a deliberate pivot: it places Smith in partnership with emerging talent while signaling openness to new creative perspectives. At a time when streaming platforms are redefining what constitutes a “blockbuster,” the move positions Fast and Loose as a hybrid between star vehicle and genre experiment.

Production Outlook

If production stays on schedule, Fast and Loose could begin filming before year’s end, aiming for a 2026 premiere on Netflix. With a grounded filmmaker like Swab steering the project and Smith back in a high-concept role that plays to both his charisma and dramatic instincts, this may be one of the more closely watched action titles on the streamer’s slate. Whether it reignites Smith’s blockbuster momentum or introduces a new creative chapter, Fast and Loose represents a calculated next step in the actor’s evolving career.
