Jason Momoa Joins the DC Universe as Lobo in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow

Jason Momoa, best known for his portrayal of Aquaman, is making a major return to the DC Universe. This time, the actor is leaving behind the underwater kingdom of Atlantis to take on the role of Lobo, the intergalactic bounty hunter and antihero, in the upcoming film Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.

The announcement marks a significant shift for Momoa, who was the face of the Aquaman franchise during the previous DC regime. His tenure began with a cameo in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), followed by Justice League (2017), and the record-breaking Aquaman (2018), which grossed over $1 billion. However, last year’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom struggled to replicate that success, earning just $439 million.

Momoa’s new role as Lobo comes as part of DC Studios’ rebooted cinematic universe under James Gunn and Peter Safran. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will be the second film in this new DC Universe, following Gunn’s Superman: Legacy, starring David Corenswet as Superman and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane.

Directed by Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya), Supergirl stars Milly Alcock (House of the Dragon) as Kara Zor-El, Superman’s cousin, with Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem of the Yellow Hills and Eve Ridley as Ruthye Mary Knolle. Ana Nogueira (The Vampire Diaries) penned the screenplay, adapting Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s critically acclaimed comic run of the same name.

Production for the film is slated to begin on January 13, 2025, with a theatrical release scheduled for June 26, 2026. While plot details are under wraps, James Gunn has teased a darker tone, contrasting the upbringing of Superman and Supergirl. “Superman was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from infancy,” Gunn explained. “Supergirl, by contrast, was raised on a fragment of Krypton, watching everyone around her die in horrific ways for the first 14 years of her life.”

Momoa’s passion for the character of Lobo has been well-documented. During press interviews for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, Momoa shared his love for the cigar-chomping antihero. “He was always my favorite,” he said. “If they ever call me and ask me to play him, it’s a f*ck yeah. I’m there.” This week, Momoa took to Instagram to confirm his casting with the caption, “They called.”

Lobo, created by writer Roger Slifer and artist Keith Giffen in Omega Men #3 (1983), is a blue-skinned, wise-cracking alien with superstrength, healing powers, and a penchant for chaos. Over the years, several filmmakers, including Guy Ritchie and Michael Bay, attempted to bring Lobo to the big screen, but none came to fruition. The character made his live-action debut on SyFy’s Krypton, played by Emmett J. Scanlan.

Momoa’s casting as Lobo is significant, as it signals the willingness of Gunn and Safran to retain fan-favorite actors from the previous DC era while reimagining them in new roles. Momoa is the first major actor to make this transition, opening the door for similar moves with other beloved stars.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow promises to be a bold new chapter for the DC Universe, with Jason Momoa’s Lobo poised to bring a unique edge to the franchise. Fans can catch the film in theaters on June 26, 2026.

Deadline was the first to report Momoa’s casting.
