Production on The Batman Part II has been temporarily paused as director Matt Reeves steps away from the project to focus on a family matter.
Deadline first reported Monday that production on the highly anticipated sequel had been halted, with Warner Bros. and DC Studios subsequently confirming the news.
“Production on The Batman Part II has been temporarily paused while Matt Reeves focuses on a family matter,” Warner Bros. and DC Studios said in a statement. “Matt has the full support of DC Studios and we look forward to continuing the journey soon.”
No additional details regarding the family matter have been disclosed, and there is currently no timetable for when filming will resume.
While some reports have characterized the situation as an indefinite delay, Warner Bros. has specifically described the production stoppage as temporary. It is also too early to determine whether the pause will have any impact on the film’s currently scheduled February 18, 2028 theatrical release.
The news comes several months into filming on the long-awaited sequel to Reeves’ 2022 film The Batman. Production began in the U.K. this summer, with filming taking place in London and additional location work in Glasgow, where portions of the city were transformed into Gotham.
Robert Pattinson recently described production as a “marathon” and said he expected to remain in London through the end of the year while working on the sequel. He has also teased the scope of the follow-up, describing it as “so ambitious” and a “real left turn from the first one.”
Pattinson returns as Bruce Wayne/Batman alongside Colin Farrell as Oz Cobb/The Penguin, Jeffrey Wright as Jim Gordon and Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth. The expanding cast also includes Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Charles Dance, Brian Tyree Henry and Sebastian Koch.
Reeves co-wrote The Batman Part II with Mattson Tomlin and remains attached as director and producer. There is currently no indication that Reeves is leaving the project or that Warner Bros. intends to move forward without him.
The sequel has already faced a lengthy road to theaters. It was originally scheduled for October 3, 2025 before being moved to October 2, 2026, then October 1, 2027. Warner Bros. later shifted the film again, setting its current release date for February 18, 2028.
That would place nearly six years between the release of The Batman in March 2022 and its sequel.
For now, Warner Bros. and DC Studios appear committed to giving Reeves the time he needs before production resumes. Whether the pause ultimately results in another release-date change remains to be seen.
The Batman Part II is currently scheduled to hit theaters on February 18, 2028.
