Chris Evans is set to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in the upcoming blockbuster Avengers: Doomsday. First reported by The Wrap, the film will reunite Evans with longtime collaborators the Russo Brothers, who are directing the highly anticipated sequel. Also joining the cast is Robert Downey Jr., who will take on the role of Doctor Doom. The movie is scheduled for release on May 1, 2026.
Evans, who previously played Steve Rogers/Captain America, has remained an iconic figure in the MCU. However, his most recent Marvel appearance was as Johnny Storm/The Human Torch in Deadpool & Wolverine, a nod to his early days as the fiery superhero in Fox’s Fantastic Four films from the 2000s. The exact nature of his role in Avengers: Doomsday remains under wraps, leaving fans to speculate whether he will reprise his role as Storm, Rogers, or perhaps both.
The multiverse storyline, a defining element of Marvel’s Phase 5, is expected to play a significant role in Doomsday. The film is poised to bring together characters and actors from across Marvel’s vast cinematic history, blending timelines, universes, and fan-favorite heroes.
Evans’ departure from the role of Captain America in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame marked a poignant chapter in the MCU. In the film, Steve Rogers traveled back in time to live a quiet life with Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell), returning to the present as an elderly man to pass on the Captain America shield to Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie). With Mackie now leading the franchise as Captain America, Evans’ potential return raises intriguing questions about the evolving legacy of the character.
When asked about revisiting the MCU, Evans told GQ in 2023 that he remained open to the idea, provided the project felt meaningful. “I wouldn’t want the black eye if it felt like a cash grab or if it didn’t live up to expectations or if it just felt like it wasn’t connected to that original thing,” he explained.
Evans’ history with Marvel spans over a decade. He first debuted as Steve Rogers in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger, later starring in Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Captain America: Civil War (2016), and four Avengers films, including Infinity War (2018) and Endgame (2019).
Outside of Marvel, Evans has explored a diverse array of roles, including the hit mystery Knives Out (2019), Pixar’s animated feature Lightyear (2022), and Netflix’s The Gray Man (2022), where he reunited with the Russo Brothers. Most recently, Evans starred in Pain Hustlers and Ghosted in 2023, further showcasing his range as an actor.
With Avengers: Doomsday, the Russo Brothers are set to deliver another monumental chapter in the MCU. The film, along with its direct sequel Avengers: Secret Wars, is expected to reshape the Marvel multiverse and bring back familiar faces in unexpected ways.
As fans eagerly await May 2026, one thing is certain: whether he’s wielding a shield or igniting flames, Chris Evans’ return is bound to make Avengers: Doomsday a must-see event.
