James Mangold and Cynthia Erivo to Receive Top Honors at 2025 Sundance Film Festival Gala

The Sundance Institute has announced that celebrated filmmaker James Mangold and multi-award-winning actress Cynthia Erivo will be recognized at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival’s gala fundraiser, Celebrating Sundance Institute Presented by Google TV. The event will take place on January 24, 2025, at the Grand Hyatt Deer Valley in Utah, honoring Mangold with the Trailblazer Award and Erivo with the Visionary Award.

James Mangold: A Trailblazer in Cinema

James Mangold, the creative mind behind critically acclaimed films such as Walk the Line, Ford v. Ferrari, and the upcoming Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown, will receive the Trailblazer Award for his unwavering contributions to the film industry. His relationship with Sundance began in 1994, when he developed the screenplay for Cop Land at the Sundance Screenwriters and Directors Labs. His directorial debut, Heavy, won the Special Jury Prize for Directing at the 1995 Sundance Film Festival.

Mangold’s cinematic journey is marked by his ability to bring humanistic themes, intimate performances, and striking imagery to a wide array of genres. Reflecting on his relationship with Sundance, Mangold said, “Sundance has been many things in my life; a faraway dream on a mountain, a laboratory at which I developed the script for Cop Land, and later, a place where I have proudly mentored talented young filmmakers. I am floored and flattered that Sundance thought my body of work was worthy of this honor.”

Cynthia Erivo: A Visionary Talent

Cynthia Erivo, known for her electrifying performances on stage and screen, will receive the Visionary Award. Currently captivating audiences as Elphaba in the film adaptation of Wicked, Erivo has previously earned Grammy, Emmy, and Tony Awards, along with two Academy Award nominations for her work in Harriet. Erivo has been a dynamic force within the entertainment industry, consistently elevating every project she touches.

Honoring Independent Storytellers

The evening will also pay tribute to Michelle Satter, Founding Senior Director of Artist Programs at Sundance Institute, for her four decades of fostering talent through the Sundance Labs. Additionally, the Vanguard Awards, presented by Acura, will be awarded to Sean Wang (Dìdi [弟弟]) and co-directors Julian Brave NoiseCat and Emily Kassie (Sugarcane), celebrating their groundbreaking work showcased at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival.

A Night of Celebration and Support

This annual gala serves as a key fundraiser for Sundance Institute, enabling the nonprofit to support independent artists year-round through labs, grants, and public programs. The event will be co-chaired by Board Chair Ebs Burnough and long-time Trustee Pat Mitchell. Amanda Kelso, Acting CEO of Sundance Institute, expressed her admiration for the honorees, stating, “James Mangold and Cynthia Erivo embody the very essence of creativity and impact within the arts. Their achievements inspire us all.”
