Fans of the horror genre, brace yourselves! On June 24th, I had the incredible opportunity to sit down with the legendary filmmaker Adam Green for an exclusive interview on Up Your Geek: Spotlight. Adam, known for his iconic Hatchet series, shared insights into his creative process, the challenges of filmmaking, and the exciting release of Hatchet: The Complete Collection in a limited edition Steelbook.
Dark Sky Films Presents: Hatchet – The Complete Collection
Dark Sky Films has officially launched their specialty label, Dark Sky Selects, with the highly anticipated release of Hatchet: The Complete Collection. This limited edition Steelbook, available from June 25th, marks the first time all four of Adam Green’s Hatchet films are packaged together. The collection includes uncensored versions of Hatchet, Hatchet 2, Hatchet 3, and Victor Crowley, along with a fifth bonus disc featuring nearly two hours of brand new bonus material.
Unleashed at a time when the fun of 80s slashers had all but disappeared, Hatchet revived the genre with its unapologetic brutality and the introduction of Victor Crowley, the modern bogeyman. With each installment, the stakes escalate, delivering bigger, bloodier scares and a relentless barrage of inventive kills. This Steelbook collection is a must-have for horror enthusiasts, offering exclusive content such as Hatchet: Swamp Tales and Production Journals, which provide a deeper look into the making of these iconic films.
Interview Highlights: Adam Green on Up Your Geek: Spotlight
During our conversation, Adam Green delved into the origins of the Hatchet series, his inspiration for creating Victor Crowley, and the journey from concept to cult classic. Here are some highlights from our interview:
Lou Lamar Booker: First, Adam, thank you for coming on. Thanks for joining us. This is Up Your Geek: Spotlight, so how’ve you been?
Adam Green: I’ve been great. I guess. I mean, how has anyone really been the last four years since the plague? But it seems like things are finally getting back up to speed. It was just starting to do in like 2022. And then we had all those wonderful strikes and just the greatest timing ever to shut down again. But things are finally getting timing right.
Lou: So, Hatchet, can you take us back to the beginning? What inspired you to create this series?
Adam: Well, it started when I was eight years old. I went to summer camp, and the camp we went to was more about cleaning than having fun. On the first night, the counselors told us to stay away from this one cabin, or else Hatchet Face would get us. They didn’t have much of a story, so I made up the story of Victor Crowley to scare the other kids. That story always stuck with me, and years later, I wrote the first draft of what became Hatchet.
Lou: Victor Crowley has become an iconic character in the horror genre. What was the process of developing his character and ensuring he stood out among other horror icons?
Adam: My biggest inspirations were American Werewolf in London and Fright Night, which took tired sub-genres and made them entertaining with good scripts and comedic actors. The key to horror comedy is to keep the comedy out of the horror. Victor Crowley had to be scary, and that was my focus.
Lou: You’re well-known for your appearances at conventions and events. How important have these been for promoting the Hatchet series and connecting with your fans?
Adam: I love doing conventions because I feel like I’m with my people. The horror community is so supportive and welcoming. Meeting fans face-to-face and hearing their stories is incredibly rewarding. It’s a special experience that keeps me motivated to continue making films.
Lou: Speaking of the Steelbook, can you tell us more about the uncensored versions and the new bonus material included in this collection?
Adam: All four films are presented in their uncensored director’s cuts. Many fans have only seen the edited versions on streaming services, so this collection is a chance to experience the films as they were meant to be seen. The fifth disc includes about two hours of new special features, like Hatchet: Swamp Tales and Production Journals, which offer an inside look at the making of the films.
Lou: What has been the most rewarding aspect of seeing how fans have embraced the Hatchet series over the years?
Adam: The most rewarding aspect is seeing how the series continues to grow and attract new fans. It’s incredible to see people cosplaying as characters from the movies and the action figures on store shelves. The support from the horror community has been amazing, and it’s what keeps me going.
Lou: Finally, when can fans expect to get their hands on the Steelbook, and where can they find it?
Adam: The Steelbook officially comes out on June 25th. Fans who pre-ordered from Dark Sky Films should start receiving their copies soon. The limited release is available on the Dark Sky Films website.
