Exclusive Interview: Joel Meyers on His Magical Journey as Albus Potter in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

In the world of Harry Potter, there is no shortage of magic, adventure, and complex characters, and for the past two years, Broadway actor Joel Meyers has embodied one of those beloved figures—Albus Potter, the son of the legendary Harry Potter. As his time in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child comes to an end, Joel sat down with Up Your Geek: Spotlight to reflect on his incredible journey, share some behind-the-scenes magic, and offer insights into what’s next for him as he takes his final bow.

Joel, a lifelong fan of the Harry Potter franchise, vividly recalls the day he discovered the casting call for the role of Albus. “I saw the open call on Actors Access,” he shared. “My girlfriend and I are both huge Harry Potter fans, and she told me, ‘You have to audition!’” Though initially skeptical about landing such a major role from an open call, Joel auditioned—and two years later, he has brought Albus Potter to life on Broadway in front of countless audiences.

Memorable Moments on Stage

Reflecting on his most unforgettable experiences on stage, Joel pointed to the fifth anniversary of the show as a highlight. “That was a special moment,” he said. “Oliver Phelps, who played one of the Weasley twins in the films, came to celebrate with us. There were super fans in the front row, and the energy was just incredible. It was one of those rare performances that felt like being a rock star on stage.”

Beyond the magical moments with fans, Joel has also faced challenges in the physically demanding production. With eight shows a week, including intense scenes like the high-flying train sequence, Joel had to reorient his life around the rigors of the role. However, he credits the support of the production team, cast, and crew for making the experience enjoyable. “At the end of the day, we’re all just theater kids with more expensive toys,” he joked. “It takes a village to make this show happen, and we’ve built a real family here.”

A Unique Bond with Albus Potter

Over the years, Joel has developed his own interpretation of Albus Potter, a character who grapples with the legacy of his father, Harry. “What I love about Albus is that he’s so much like Harry in that they both have good hearts but don’t always know how to do the right thing,” Joel explained. “That’s where their friction comes from—they’re too alike.”

One of the most rewarding aspects of playing Albus has been the freedom to make the character his own, with unique moments that have evolved over time. Joel shared one such hidden element: a reference to Prisoner of Azkaban during a train scene. “I wasn’t sure anyone would catch it,” he said with a smile, “but it turns out some fans did, including Lou’s son!”

Saying Goodbye to Hogwarts

As Joel prepares to leave Harry Potter and the Cursed Child on November 10th, the actor reflects on the emotions of parting with such an iconic role. “It’s bittersweet,” he admitted. “I’ve spent two years in this role, and it’s been an incredible journey, but I’m also excited for what’s next.”

So, what’s next for Joel Meyers? He plans to take some well-deserved rest before diving back into auditioning and pursuing new opportunities. “It’s back to square one,” he joked. “But I’m excited to see where this adventure takes me next.”

Joel also offered words of encouragement to the next actor who will take on the role of Albus: “Stay hydrated and have fun. You’ll figure out your own version of Albus, and that’s the beauty of this show—everyone brings something new to the role.”

Final Thoughts

As Joel Meyers steps off the Broadway stage, his portrayal of Albus Potter leaves a lasting impact on fans. His heartfelt connection to the character, his dedication to the craft, and his ability to make the role uniquely his own have ensured that his version of Albus will be remembered for years to come.
