Marvel’s X-Men Cast Officially Revealed With Adam Driver, Sadie Sink, Inde Navarrette and More

Marvel Studios has officially found its X-Men.

After years of speculation surrounding when and how the mutants would finally take center stage in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Marvel unveiled the cast of its upcoming X-Men reboot during its presentation at D23.

Christopher Abbott will lead the team as Professor Charles Xavier, with Inde Navarrette taking on the role of Rogue and Maya Boyd portraying Ororo Munroe, better known as Storm. Adam Driver is also officially joining the film as longtime X-Men villain Nathaniel Essex, aka Mister Sinister.

They join previously cast Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Scott Summers/Cyclops and Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, giving audiences their clearest look yet at the new generation of mutants who will lead the X-Men into the MCU.

Thunderbolts* filmmaker Jake Schreier is directing the project, which Marvel Studios has set for release in May 2028.

The casting represents a significant turning point for a project Marvel Studios has been developing for years following Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox. While mutants and characters connected to the X-Men have gradually made their way into the MCU, this film will establish a new core ensemble built specifically for Marvel Studios’ version of the franchise.

Adam Driver Is Mister Sinister

Perhaps the biggest surprise to come out of Marvel’s announcement is Driver’s role.

The Star Wars and Marriage Story actor had recently been linked to the upcoming X-Men film, but reports had suggested he could be playing Sebastian Shaw, the powerful mutant and longtime member of the Hellfire Club. Marvel’s D23 presentation instead revealed Driver as Mister Sinister.

It’s a casting choice that could offer some clues about the direction of the new film.

Created by Chris Claremont and Marc Silvestri, Mister Sinister has long been one of the X-Men’s most dangerous adversaries. His obsession with mutant genetics and experimentation has placed him at the center of some of the team’s most complicated stories, particularly those involving Cyclops and Jean Grey.

Those connections become especially noteworthy with Connor and Sink playing Scott Summers and Jean Grey in the upcoming movie.

Sinister has also had an unusual history with the X-Men’s previous big-screen franchise. Fox teased the Essex Corporation in X-Men: Apocalypse and subsequently included additional references connected to Nathaniel Essex, but the franchise never ultimately delivered a full live-action Mister Sinister.

Marvel Studios now has the opportunity to introduce the villain properly for the first time on the big screen, with Driver taking on the role.

A New Generation of X-Men

Abbott’s casting as Charles Xavier also places him in a role with more than two decades of cinematic history behind it.

Patrick Stewart first portrayed Professor X in 2000’s X-Men and continued playing the character throughout Fox’s original film series. James McAvoy later portrayed a younger Xavier beginning with 2011’s X-Men: First Class, while Stewart eventually crossed into the MCU with an alternate version of the character in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Abbott will now have the opportunity to establish a new Xavier for Marvel Studios and a new interpretation of the character separate from the versions that defined the previous franchise.

The same opportunity exists for several members of the new cast.

Navarrette follows Anna Paquin as Rogue, but Marvel Studios has considerable room to explore aspects of the character that Fox’s films largely left untouched. The comic-book version of Rogue has often been portrayed as one of the X-Men’s most formidable members, possessing super strength and flight in addition to her ability to absorb the powers, memories and life force of others through physical contact.

Boyd, meanwhile, becomes the latest actor to portray Storm following Halle Berry and Alexandra Shipp. Ororo Munroe is not only one of the most recognizable X-Men but one of the team’s most accomplished leaders, having repeatedly led the group throughout Marvel Comics history.

Sink and Connor will inherit two characters at the heart of X-Men mythology as Jean Grey and Cyclops. Their inclusion alongside Mister Sinister is particularly intriguing given the villain’s extensive history with both characters and the Summers family.

Weaving’s Emma Frost adds another potentially complicated dynamic to the ensemble. The powerful telepath has occupied nearly every side of the mutant conflict over her comic-book history, from adversary to X-Man and leader, leaving plenty of room for Marvel Studios to determine exactly where her loyalties lie when audiences first meet her.

The MCU’s Mutant Era Is Finally Taking Shape

Marvel Studios has taken an unusually patient approach to the X-Men.

Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox brought the film rights to the X-Men back under the same corporate umbrella as the rest of Marvel’s characters, immediately creating expectations that mutants would eventually become a major part of the MCU.

Instead of immediately rebooting the franchise, Marvel gradually began planting mutant-related elements throughout its universe while simultaneously revisiting the X-Men’s cinematic past.

Patrick Stewart returned as Professor Xavier in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Kelsey Grammer’s Beast appeared in The Marvels. Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine became a central part of Deadpool & Wolverine, and additional characters from Fox’s X-Men films have continued to appear as Marvel explores the Multiverse Saga.

The upcoming X-Men, however, represents something different.

Rather than relying primarily on legacy versions of these characters, Marvel Studios is assembling a new generation intended to carry the franchise forward.

Schreier’s involvement also makes the project particularly interesting. His work on Thunderbolts* demonstrated an ability to balance a large superhero ensemble while keeping the story focused on the personalities, relationships and emotional conflicts within the group — an approach that could translate naturally to the X-Men.

At its core, the X-Men has always been as much about the relationships between its characters as the threats they face.

There are still significant pieces of Marvel’s plans that remain unknown, including which additional mutants could join the film, how long mutants have existed within the MCU and exactly what role Mister Sinister will play in bringing these characters together.

But after years of waiting, Marvel Studios has finally answered one of the biggest questions surrounding the future of the MCU.

The X-Men are coming — and we now know who will be leading Marvel’s next generation of mutants.
