Santa Barbara International Film Festival to Celebrate Martin Scorsese and Justine Triet

The 39th Santa Barbara International Film Festival (SBIFF) is poised to honor cinematic legends Martin Scorsese and Justine Triet with the Directors of the Year Award in an exceptional ceremony set for Monday night at the Arlington Theatre. This year, the film festival adds a momentous occasion to its offerings, dedicating an evening to the legendary Martin Scorsese, a director whose name is synonymous with the zenith of film artistry. With a career spanning decades and a portfolio including iconic films such as Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, The Wolf of Wall Street, and his latest masterpiece, Killers of the Flower Moon, Scorsese continues to dazzle audiences and critics alike at the age of 81.

In an equally thrilling development, the festival will honor Justine Triet, whose film Anatomy of a Fall has not only received an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture but has also earned her a nomination for Best Director. Triet’s nomination marks her as the eighth woman ever to be recognized in this category, placing her among an esteemed group of trailblazers in the film industry. This illustrious list includes Lina Wertmüller, Jane Campion, Sophia Coppola, Kathryn Bigelow, Greta Gerwig, Emerald Fennell, and Chloé Zhao, whose groundbreaking work has paved the way for women in cinema.

The ceremony will feature one-on-one conversations between the honorees and Scott Feinberg, Executive Awards Editor for The Hollywood Reporter and a familiar presence at SBIFF. These discussions will delve into their illustrious careers, creative processes, and the impact of their latest films. The evening will culminate in a group discussion, offering attendees a rare glimpse into the minds of two of the most influential figures in contemporary cinema.

Roger Durling, Executive Director of SBIFF, encapsulated the sentiment of the film community, stating, “Two of the most exciting directors working — a veteran master and a talented maverick — will sit and chat with brilliant moderator Feinberg. It’s bound to be an exceptional evening not to be missed.”

This year’s Directors of the Year Award ceremony promises to be a highlight of the festival, celebrating the achievements of two seminal filmmakers whose work continues to inspire and shape the world of film. The event is scheduled for Monday, February 12, at 8 p.m. at the Arlington Theatre. For those interested in attending this once-in-a-lifetime event and for additional information, visit sbiff.org.
