Up Your Geek Spotlight Interview: Inside “The Movie Man” with Director Matt Finlin – Santa Barbara Film Festival

In the latest edition of Up Your Geek: Spotlight, we delve deeper into the world of “The Movie Man,” a documentary that explores the intersection of dreams, cinema, and the indomitable spirit of one man, Keith Stata. Directed by Matt Finlin, this film invites audiences into the heart of Kinmount, Ontario—a place seemingly forgotten by time but home to one of the most unique cinematic experiences in the world: Highlands Cinemas.
Over four decades ago, Keith Stata embarked on a quixotic journey to build a cinema in Kinmount, a town with just about 200 residents, nestled in the Ontario backwoods. “It’s a place that looks like it would have worked well as a location for The Last Picture Show,” Finlin shares, highlighting the town’s cinematic desolation that ironically hosts this vibrant cinema oasis. Stata, whose former career was in construction, meticulously expanded Highlands Cinemas from a single screen in 1979 to the five-screen multiplex it is today. This theater, operating seasonally due to weather, staffing, and Stata’s health challenges, has become the town’s primary attraction, drawing moviegoers with its unique charm and the promise of an unforgettable experience.

Highlands Cinemas is more than just a place to watch movies; it’s a cultural landmark, housing a one-of-a-kind movie and nostalgia museum. “The admission price includes access to a museum that would make the Academy jealous,” Finlin quipped, underscoring Stata’s dedication to preserving cinematic history. With a world-class collection of projectors representing the entire history of theatrical exhibition, Stata has created an immersive environment that celebrates the art of cinema in every corner.
Maintaining this cinematic paradise has not been without its challenges. Stata, now 75, faces the daunting task of keeping the theater operational amid harsh winters, staffing shortages, and the relentless march of time. “He’s weathered it all,” Finlin says, recounting how Stata, despite becoming quite sick and even breaking his foot, has never wavered in his commitment to Highlands Cinemas. The COVID-19 pandemic forced a temporary shutdown, casting uncertainty over the theater’s future. Yet, Stata’s hope persists, fueled by the dream that moviegoers will return for one more season.

Amidst the reels and projectors, Stata’s heart beats for more than just cinema. With 42 cats under his care, he adds a layer of warmth and personality to the Highlands experience. “If he ever sells the theater or passes it on, the cats are part of the deal,” Finlin joked, painting a picture of Stata’s all-encompassing love for his creation. This detail not only highlights Stata’s character but also the unique ambiance that makes Highlands Cinemas a must-visit for film lovers.
Finlin’s journey to bring “The Movie Man” to life has been a personal and professional odyssey. From his first enchanting visit to Highlands Cinemas as a child to the challenges of capturing Stata’s story on film, Finlin has navigated the documentary filmmaking process with a clear vision and a deep respect for his subject. “Capturing such intimate and evocative moments required a vérité approach,” Finlin explains, emphasizing his desire to immerse viewers fully in the world of Highlands Cinemas.
As “The Movie Man” prepares for its world premiere at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, Finlin reflects on the broader themes of his documentary. He hopes to inspire audiences to support local and independent art forms, recognizing the vital role they play in our communities and culture. “Keith Stata’s legacy is a testament to the impact one person can have on a community,” Finlin states, hoping that Stata’s story will remind viewers of the magic that can be found in the pursuit of dreams, no matter how quixotic they may seem.

Don’t miss the opportunity to witness this love letter to cinema and the enduring spirit of a dreamer. “The Movie Man” premieres at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, offering a glimpse into the world of Keith Stata and his cinematic haven in the woods.
