Santa Barbara Film Fest: Martin Scorsese and Justine Triet Feted at Directors Tribute

The Santa Barbara International Film Festival honored filmmakers Martin Scorsese and Justine Triet with the outstanding directors of the year award, celebrating their acclaimed works, Killers of the Flower Moon and Anatomy of a Fall, respectively.
Both Scorsese and Triet, lauded as this year’s best director Oscar nominees, were recognized at a special tribute event sponsored by The Hollywood Reporter. The evening consisted of 30-minute conversations with each honoree, moderated by THR’s Scott Feinberg, delving into their illustrious careers and the paths leading to their current celebrated films.
Anatomy of a Fall director Triet opened the discussions. She reminisced about her initial encounter with the film’s star Sandra Hüller 12 years prior and her unique preparation for the best picture nominee, which involved watching The Boston Strangler “40 times before shooting.” Triet also discussed the intriguing theme of secret recordings featured in both Anatomy of a Fall and her 2019 film Sibyl, sharing a personal anecdote from her youth. Additionally, she provided insight into the selection of a cover of 50 Cent’s “P.I.M.P.” for the film’s soundtrack and the challenges of working with the canine star Messi, who portrayed Snoop.
Following Triet, Martin Scorsese received a standing ovation as he took the stage. He shared anecdotes about his long-term collaborations with Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio. Scorsese reflected on his evolving relationship with De Niro, highlighting their intuitive understanding and shared history. He contrasted this with DiCaprio’s vibrant energy and the extensive discussions that shape their creative process. Scorsese humbly addressed the influence of his work on contemporary cinema, regarding any echoes of his style seen in today’s TV and films as homages and an honor.
The evening concluded with SBIFF executive director Roger Durling presenting Scorsese with his award, acknowledging his remarkable career marked by 10 best director Oscar nominations and a single win. Scorsese’s response encapsulated his perspective on the value of creative fulfillment over accolades, emphasizing the joy and privilege of filmmaking itself.
This tribute at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival not only highlighted the exceptional talents of Martin Scorsese and Justine Triet but also celebrated their contributions to the art of cinema, inspiring both industry peers and film enthusiasts.
