Red Sonja Reboot to Ignite San Diego Comic-Con Ahead of Theatrical Release

A warrior woman with red hair holds a sword while wearing armor, set against a dramatic, fiery background, representing the character Red Sonja.

A flame-haired warrior. A tyrannical empire. A legend reborn.

Get ready—Red Sonja is making her long-awaited return to the big screen, bringing high-stakes fantasy action to a new generation of fans. Samuel Goldwyn Films has officially announced that the new reboot will arrive in theaters on August 15, 2025, followed by a digital release on August 29. But before the film slashes its way into cinemas, it’s making a powerful first strike at San Diego Comic-Con 2025.

Comic-Con Panel Announcement

On July 24 at 5:30 PM PT, the cast and creators of Red Sonja will take the stage at Ballroom 20 inside the San Diego Convention Center.

The panel will feature Matilda Lutz (Red Sonja), Robert Sheehan, and Martyn Ford, joined by director MJ Bassett, for an exclusive discussion about bringing this iconic character back to life. Fans in attendance will be the first to witness the debut of the new trailer and hear firsthand stories about the making of the film.

The Story

Captured. Chained. Forced to fight.

In this reimagining, Red Sonja is a hardened warrior imprisoned in the brutal fighting pits of a tyrant’s empire. Stripped of her freedom, she must rally a band of outcasts and ignite a rebellion to confront the ruthless ruler Dragan and his deadly bride, Dark Annisia.

Matilda Lutz leads a cast that includes Wallis Day, Michael Bisping, Phillip Winchester, and Trevor Eve, setting the stage for a fantasy film driven by vengeance, grit, and sword-swinging spectacle.

A Comic Icon Reforged

Red Sonja, originally introduced in the pages of Conan the Barbarian, has long stood as a symbol of female strength, courage, and independence. With this reboot, her story is being reforged for a modern audience.

Directed by MJ Bassett and written by Tasha Huo (Netflix’s Tomb Raider), the film brings together an impressive producing team including Mark Canton, Luke Lieberman, Jonathan Yunger, and others.

“The fans are ready, the movie is ready, and I can’t wait to share Red Sonja’s story with the world,” said producer Luke Lieberman. “Those who know her will see the heart and fire they love, and newcomers will discover the true She-Devil with a Sword.”
