San Diego Comic-Con 2024 was a treasure trove for Whovians, with Disney Branded Television and BBC making a thrilling announcement. The War Between The Land And The Sea, a brand-new Doctor Who spinoff, was unveiled to a packed Hall H.
This five-part series will star Russell Tovey (Feud, American Horror Story: NYC) and Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Surface, Loki), alongside familiar faces from the Doctor Who universe, including Jemma Redgrave as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart and Alexander Devrient as Colonel Ibrahim.
Doctor Who fans were treated to a special panel featuring the Fifteenth Doctor himself, Ncuti Gatwa, along with Millie Gibson (Ruby Sunday) and the legendary showrunner, writer, and executive producer Russell T Davies. Moderated by Josh Horowitz, host of the Happy Sad Confused podcast and MTV, the discussion covered the Fifteenth Doctor’s first season, fan reactions, behind-the-scenes stories, and a sneak peek of the upcoming Christmas Special starring Nicola Coughlan.
In an exciting moment for fans, Davies officially announced The War Between The Land And The Sea. The series will delve into an international crisis triggered by the emergence of a fearsome and ancient species from the ocean, leading to a dramatic conflict between land and sea. UNIT, led by Kate Lethbridge-Stewart, will be at the forefront of this battle. The series will see the return of the classic Doctor Who villains, the Sea Devils, who first appeared in 1972.
Davies expressed his enthusiasm: “I’m so lucky to work with such a magnificent cast. And this is a huge, muscular, thrilling drama which will shake The Whoniverse to its foundations. When the Doctor’s not in town, the whole of humanity is in trouble.”
Filming for The War Between The Land And The Sea is set to begin next month under the direction of Dylan Holmes-Williams, known for his work on Doctor Who episodes 73 Yards and Dot and Bubble. The series will air exclusively on Disney+ where available, and on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the U.K.
Produced by Bad Wolf in collaboration with BBC Studios for Disney Branded Television and BBC, the executive producers include Russell T Davies, Phil Collinson, Joel Collins, Julie Gardner, and Jane Tranter.
The recent season of Doctor Who featuring the Fifteenth Doctor is currently available to stream on Disney+ and on BBC iPlayer in the U.K. Fans can look forward to more thrilling adventures as the Whoniverse continues to expand with this exciting new spinoff.
