Disney+ has decided not to proceed with a second season of The Acolyte, the latest Star Wars series from Lucasfilm. The show, which explored the rise of the Sith roughly 100 years before the events of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, will end after its first season, despite initial plans and fan anticipation for future episodes.
The Acolyte debuted on June 4 with two episodes, drawing significant attention from fans of the Star Wars franchise. The series generated 4.8 million views on its first day, marking the biggest series premiere on Disney+ in 2024. Within five days, global viewership climbed to 11.1 million. The show’s promising start earned it a spot on Nielsen’s Top 10 originals chart, peaking at No. 6 in its second week. However, the initial momentum quickly waned, with the show dropping out of the Top 10 by its third week and only reappearing at No. 10 after the finale, which recorded the lowest viewership for a Star Wars series finale on the platform.
Despite respectable reviews from critics, who gave the series a 78% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, The Acolyte faced a divided fanbase. Some fans criticized the show for its diverse casting and perceived “wokeness,” leading to review-bombing and backlash on social media. This negative reception likely contributed to the decision not to renew the series. Leslye Headland, the show’s creator, expressed disappointment over the backlash, noting in an interview with THR that it saddened her to see her work targeted for its LGBTQ+ representation and diverse cast. Star Amandla Stenberg also responded to the criticism with a song on social media, further highlighting the challenges the series faced in winning over its audience.
While The Acolyte ended on a cliffhanger, teasing potential storylines and even hinting at the return of beloved characters like Yoda, the series did not garner the necessary viewership to justify a second season. Headland had pitched ideas for continuing the story and expressed hope for a renewal, but Lucasfilm ultimately decided against it. This decision is consistent with Disney+’s approach to renewing only high-end, big-budget series that maintain strong viewership numbers.
The cancellation of The Acolyte marks a contrast to the continued success of other Star Wars series on Disney+, such as The Mandalorian, which is set to cross over into feature films with The Mandalorian & Grogu, and Ahsoka, which has been renewed for a second season.
The Acolyte was a mystery-thriller set in the final days of the High Republic era, following a former Padawan and her Jedi Master as they investigated a series of crimes, only to confront more sinister forces than they anticipated. The cast featured Amandla Stenberg, Lee Jung-jae, Manny Jacinto, Jodie Turner-Smith, Dafne Keen, Rebecca Henderson, Charlie Barnett, Dean-Charles Chapman, and Carrie-Anne Moss.
In the end, despite its intriguing premise and star-studded cast, The Acolyte struggled to maintain the momentum needed to secure its place in the Star Wars universe, falling victim to the changing landscape of streaming and the challenges of sustaining viewer interest in an increasingly crowded market.
